Opportunities
Cooperative Programs
Dual-Degree (Accelerated)
Allegheny has formal dual-degree programs in the following fields,
with the specified institutions. Others may be arranged. Such programs
provide both a solid liberal arts foundation and professional training
in less than the usual time.
- Nursing: Case Western Reserve University (3/4, bachelor's and
doctorate)
Bachelor's/Certification
Similar to the dual-degree programs, except in providing certification
instead of a second degree.
- Medical Technology: Rochester (3/1)
Other Programs
Emphasis in Marine Sciences/Policy: Allegheny is a member of Duke
University's Marine Science Education Consortium (MSEC). Students
spend a semester off-campus studying marine biology and coastal land
use policy.
- Marine Biology: Duke Marine Station, Beaufort, N.C., and Bermuda
Biological Station.
Experiental Learning
The following are permanent departmental internships. Many others
may be arranged individually.
- Conservation biology (Erie National Wildlife Refuge)
- Fisheries biology (Game Commission Fish Hatchery)
- Allied Health care (Meadville Medical Center)
Allegheny faculty engaged in research frequently use student assistants,
who work with them locally and in other research environments, such
as the University of Toronto, Johns Hopkins University, the University
of Rochester, and the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.
Allegheny's location offers unique opportunities to study plant,
bird, animal, and insect life in natural settings such as:
- Bousson Environmental Research Reserve
- Allegheny National Forest
- Erie Wildlife Refuge
- Geneva wetlands
- Presque Isle and Pymatunig State Parks
- Tamarack Lake
- Woodcock Creek Lake
Outstanding student work is recognized annually with the Biology Faculty
Prize and the Robert E. Bugbee Prize. There is also an active chapter
of
Beta Beta Beta, the national biology honor society.
The annual Darling Lecture Series brings a nationally known scientist
to campus to lecture and conduct seminars for students. The department
regularly sponsors other seminars and guest speakers, including alumni,
each year.
